Add soft padding, structure and heat-resistant insulation to your sewing, quilting and creative projects with Hemline Heat Resistant Compressed Wadding.
Made from 100% polyester, this 170gsm heavyweight non woven wadding is a sew in option with flame-retardant properties. Its compressed construction provides padding and structure while remaining soft despite its high density.
At 90cm wide, it is ideal for quilted projects, bag making, placemats, table runners and many other sewing and creative applications.
Why Choose Heat Resistant Wadding?
Heat resistant wadding is a useful choice when you want padding and thermal insulation as well as structure. Because this is a sew in wadding, there is no fusible adhesive layer to iron onto your fabric before sewing.
Hemline recommends this wadding for patchwork and quilting as well as projects such as pot holders, pot mats and ironing pads when used with at least two layers. It can also be used as an ironing cover to help protect sensitive fabrics and embellishments such as pearls and sequins.
Use it between suitable fabric layers and secure it using your preferred sewing or quilting method. Hemline recommends tacking the wadding to the reverse of your fabric, adding the backing fabric and sewing the layers together by hand or machine approximately 15–20cm apart.
Important: Heat resistant and flame retardant do not mean heat proof or fire proof. Always use appropriate fabrics and construction methods for the intended project, and take care around direct heat, flames and very hot surfaces.

Helpful Tip from Chris
When trying a new wadding or interfacing, I always recommend testing it on a scrap of the same fabric you’re using for your project first. This lets you see how the finished layers feel and behave before committing to your project.
When sewing quilting weight fabric with wadding, I generally start with a stitch length of around 3 and a size 90/14 needle, such as the Schmetz Microtex Sewing Machine Needles Size 90 / 14. My favourite thread for this type of sewing is Threadsation™ Bag Makers Sewing Thread.
Your ideal needle and stitch length can vary depending on your fabric, thread and number of layers, so a quick test sample is always worthwhile.
