Soft, lofty and beautifully lightweight, Matilda’s Own O-Sew-Soft Polyester Wadding is an Australian made 100% polyester batting designed to add cushioning, warmth and a soft padded finish to quilting, sewing and selected bag making projects.
Made from a blend of polyester fibres chosen to balance coverage, loft and softness, O-Sew-Soft is supported by a fine scrim that helps hold the fibres in place and reduce bearding. The result is a high-loft wadding that feels soft and comfortable while retaining more body than an extremely light, limp batting.
For bag makers, this is a wadding to choose when softness and padding are more important than firm structure. It can give quilted bags, totes, pouches and padded accessories a fuller, cushioned feel, but it is not intended to make a bag stand firmly upright on its own.

How Does O-Sew-Soft Feel?
One of the hardest things about choosing wadding online is understanding how it will actually feel inside your finished project.
From my hands-on testing at Chris Lucas Designs, O-Sew-Soft feels beautifully soft, lofty and lightweight. Compared with a dense wadding such as Thermolam 272, it feels thicker and fluffier with more cushioning, but provides less firm structural support.
For a quilt, I would think of O-Sew-Soft as the warmer, loftier option when you want that soft, cosy padded feel without creating an excessively heavy quilt. For a bag, it adds softness and padding rather than the firm structure you would choose a dedicated bag foam or stabiliser to provide.
O-Sew-Soft vs Thermolam 272
These two waddings can feel similar in softness, but they behave quite differently in a finished project.
- O-Sew-Soft: Higher loft, thicker and more cushioned. Best when softness, padding and warmth are the priority.
- Thermolam 272: Denser, flatter and more compact. Provides more support and stability with less puff.
If you’re making a bag and want a softly padded or quilted finish, O-Sew-Soft can be a lovely choice. If you want more body and support with a flatter profile, Thermolam 272 may be the better option.

Care Instructions
To help your finished project last, Matilda’s Own recommends washing with a suitable pH-neutral, low-phosphate fabric wash. O-Sew-Soft is machine washable.
Always consider the care requirements of every fabric, thread and component used in your finished project and follow the most delicate care requirement where they differ.
Helpful Tip from Chris
When choosing wadding for a bag, think first about what you want the finished bag to feel like. O-Sew-Soft gives you lovely padding and loft, but it isn’t a substitute for a firm bag stabiliser when you need strong stand-up structure.
For quilted bags and pouches, the stitching itself can also change how the finished piece behaves. Closer quilting will compress the loft and create a flatter, more controlled surface, while wider quilting lets more of that lovely softness and puff remain visible.
As with any new combination of exterior fabric, lining and wadding, I recommend making a small quilted sample first. It lets you see exactly how much puff, softness and body your chosen layers will create before cutting your complete project.
