Seam Roller vs Iron – When Should You Use Each?
One of the most common questions I get asked is whether a seam roller replaces an iron.
While a seam roller is an incredibly handy tool, it works best alongside your iron rather than replacing it. Each has its own strengths, and knowing when to use each one can make your sewing more efficient.

My sewing room tip: I keep my seam roller right beside my sewing machine and use it constantly throughout a project. It saves countless trips to the ironing board, especially when making bags. Once the project is finished, I then use my iron for any final pressing that’s needed.

Choose the 50mm Silicone Seam Roller when you want to cover a wider area more quickly. The wider roller is especially helpful for larger folded sections, longer seams and bag panels.
It is also ideal after applying double-sided adhesive tape. Rolling firmly over the taped area helps create a stronger bond before stitching and keeps everything nicely aligned while sewing.
I also use seam rollers to flatten folded edges, zipper tape, pockets and seam allowances throughout the construction process. Having one sitting beside my sewing machine means I can keep sewing without constantly stopping to use the iron, making bag making quicker and more enjoyable.
For narrow straps, smaller components and more controlled pressing, the Silicone Seam Roller 30mm may be the better choice.
