Seam Roller vs Iron – When Should You Use Each?
One of the most common questions I get asked is whether a seam roller replaces an iron.
While a seam roller is an incredibly handy tool, it works best alongside your iron rather than replacing it. Each has its own strengths, and knowing when to use each one can make your sewing more efficient.

My sewing room tip: I keep my seam roller right beside my sewing machine and use it constantly throughout a project. It saves countless trips to the ironing board, especially when making bags. Once the project is finished, I then use my iron for any final pressing that’s needed.

Helpful Tip from Chris
One of my favourite ways to use a seam roller is after applying double-sided adhesive tape. Rolling firmly over the taped area helps create a stronger bond before stitching and keeps everything nicely aligned while sewing.
I also use it to flatten folded edges, straps, zipper tape and seam allowances throughout the construction process. Having it sitting beside my sewing machine means I can keep sewing without constantly stopping to use the iron, making bag making quicker and more enjoyable.
