Description
Metal Sewing Clips for Bag Making, Quilting and Sewing Projects
Metal Sewing Clips provide a strong and durable alternative to standard plastic sewing clips, making them ideal for holding layers securely in place while you sew.
Their compact size makes them easier to sew and manoeuvre around than larger plastic clips, while the removable non-slip rubber protective tips help grip materials securely and reduce the risk of marking delicate surfaces.
Unlike sewing pins, these clips won’t leave holes in your materials and are easy to reposition as you work.
Why Bag Makers Love Metal Sewing Clips
- Strong metal construction designed for regular use
- Smaller size makes them easier to sew and manoeuvre around
- Removable non-slip rubber protective tips help protect materials
- Provides a secure grip on multiple layers without shifting
- Great for sewing close to seams, bindings and zipper installations
- No pin holes in vinyl faux leather, genuine leather or waterproof fabrics
- Easy to remove and reposition while sewing
- A long-lasting alternative to plastic sewing clips
Removable Protective Caps
The gripping ends have removable non-slip rubber protective caps. Leave the caps fitted when holding vinyl faux leather, leather, waterproof canvas and other materials where direct metal contact could leave a mark. The rubber tips also help grip the layers while you work.
The caps can be carefully removed and refitted when needed. If you use the clips without their protective caps, the exposed metal may mark delicate surfaces, so test first on an offcut of your project materials.
Want Your Caps Non Removable?
If you prefer the protective caps to stay fixed in place, you can add a tiny drop of suitable adhesive inside each cap before pushing it back onto the clip. This can help stop the caps slipping off during use, especially when sewing close to the clip or when the clip isn’t squeezed fully open before removing it. Allow the adhesive to cure completely according to its instructions before using the clips on your project.
We have a variety of adhesives to explore, including Hemline Fabric Craft and Textile Adhesive Glue 30g and Gutermann HT2 Textile Glue 30g. Always check the adhesive is suitable for bonding the rubber caps to the metal clips and test on one clip first.
A Handy Alternative to Sewing Pins
Many bag makers prefer clips over traditional sewing pins when working with thicker materials or fabrics that could be damaged by pin holes.
These clips are especially useful when sewing:
- Vinyl faux leather
- Genuine leather
- Waterproof canvas
- Webbing
- Multiple layers of interfacing
- Bag foam
- Binding and edge finishes
Stay Organised During Bag Construction
One of my favourite uses for metal sewing clips is attaching pattern pieces directly to cut fabric, lining and interfacing pieces.
This simple trick helps keep important information attached to each piece, including:
- Pattern markings
- Placement lines
- Strap positioning marks
- Zipper placement guides
- Construction notes
It’s a simple way to stay organised, especially when working on larger or more detailed bag projects.

Choosing the Right Sewing Clips
Different sewing clips are useful for different sewing jobs, and many bag makers like to keep more than one style in their sewing room. If you’re unsure which sewing clips are best for your projects, be sure to read my Ultimate Guide to Sewing Clips for Bag Making, where I explain the different clip styles and how I use them when making bags.
- Standard sewing clips are great everyday clips for holding fabric layers, seams, binding and small sewing sections.
- Long sewing clips provide extra reach and are especially handy for wider straps, bulky layers and larger bag making projects.
- Wide mouth sewing clips are designed to accommodate thicker projects as the wider opening allows them to grip thicker sections that may be difficult for standard clips to hold.
- Metal and pointed sewing clips are helpful for smaller areas, curves, corners and more detailed sewing jobs.
- Magnetic sewing clips / Fabric Grips are particularly useful when working inside bags, helping to hold pockets, straps and other components securely in place where larger sewing clips may not fit.
Having a few different clip types and sizes gives you more flexibility when sewing different styles of bags, accessories and quilting projects.
